Treatment of Nervous Patients

We’ve been helping nervous patients for over 20 years – from those with mild dental anxiety to those who haven’t visited a dentist in decades.

If you’ve made it this far, even calling yourself a ‘nervous patient’ might feel like a massive understatement.

But you’ve found the right place. We won the 2025 national award for Treatment of Nervous Patients. And here’s why.

What Makes Us Different

We’ve built our practice around one principle: if you’re nervous about the dentist, you need more time, more privacy, and more reassurance than a standard appointment can offer.

Here’s how we do that.

You’ll spend an hour (or more) with a treatment coordinator before you see a dentist

Not a dentist. A coordinator. Someone whose job is to listen, explain, and guide you through the process without clinical jargon or pressure. We have two glass-walled consultation rooms – soundproofed for privacy, but transparent so you can see the practice around you. Dentists working, the team going about their day. We’re not hiding anything.

The building doesn’t feel like a dentist’s

Fresh flowers in reception. No hospital smell. Calm, comfortable spaces designed to help you relax.

Patients like Phillipa tell us: ‘I didn’t feel I was in a dentist surgery. From the first day I walked through the door, I felt relaxed.’

You’ll have privacy when you need it

We have three separate relaxation rooms. You’re never in a shared waiting area unless you choose to be. If you need space to breathe, gather yourself, or sit quietly before your appointment, you’ve got it. And you’re absolutely welcome to bring someone with you for support.

You’ll be treated like a guest, not a procedure

Sedation Options

We offer a range of sedation options for nervous patients, including IV sedation, also known as ‘twilight’ or ‘conscious’ sedation.

How IV sedation works

Our consultant anaesthetist administers the sedation through an IV. It doesn’t put you to sleep as with a general anaesthetic, but it creates a state of deep relaxation and drowsiness. You might drop off during treatment, but if we need to, we can rouse you to answer a question or you’ll respond to the gentle squeeze of your hand – though with the amnesic effect of the medication, you’re unlikely to remember any of this.

Sedation also makes time pass very quickly. Your procedure will feel like it’s over in minutes.

What this means

You get the treatment you need without the fear and without the memory. You’ll need someone to bring you home afterwards, but the procedure itself becomes something you don’t have to consciously experience.

Your Surgical Team

Your implant surgery will be led by Dr Guy McLellan, one of the few dental surgeons in the UK who holds both medical and dental qualifications. This dual expertise is rare, it means he understands not just your teeth, but the broader medical context of your treatment, particularly important for complex cases or patients with medical conditions.

If you choose sedation, our consultant anaesthetist will administer and monitor it throughout your procedure. You’ll also be supported by experienced care nurses.

What About Pain?

The procedure itself will be pain-free. Your local anaesthetic (or sedation if you choose it) means you won’t feel anything during treatment.

Afterwards, you’ll have some soreness and mild aching. You’ve had surgery, so that’s to be expected. Over-the-counter painkillers are usually enough to manage it.

Dental implant surgery is precise, which means the healing process is usually faster than you might expect.

Alternative Therapies

Some people find alternative therapies helpful for managing dental anxiety. If you’re interested in options like Amatsu therapy, just mention it in your consultation.

FAQs for New or Nervous Patients

Frequently Asked Questions

We work with teeth in all conditions – broken, decayed, missing. It’s our job, and we’ve worked with thousands of patients before. Nobody on our team will judge you or make you feel silly.

Many people come to us after years of avoiding the dentist. You’re not alone, and you’re not unusual.

We take that seriously. During your consultation, you can tell us what happened. We’ll listen, and we’ll work out together how to make this experience different. You’re in control of the pace.

Our practice has placed over 20,000 implants. Dr Guy McLellan, who leads your surgery, holds both medical and dental qualifications. If you’re having sedation, our consultant anaesthetist monitors you throughout. Our care nurses are with you the entire time.

Complications are rare, but we’re equipped to handle them if they occur. You’re not in a high street practice with basic equipment – this is an advanced surgical facility.

During your consultation, we’ll show you exactly what will happen. You can tour the practice, see the surgical suite, meet the team, and look at photos of previous work. We’ll walk you through every step so there are no surprises.

You’ll know what the room looks like, who’ll be there, how long it takes, what you’ll feel, and what happens afterwards. No question is too small.

If you choose sedation, you’ll be deeply relaxed and unlikely to experience panic. If you’re having local anaesthetic only and you need to stop, we stop. You can raise your hand at any time.

We’ve worked with patients who’ve cancelled five times before showing up. We understand that getting through the door can be hard. Once you’re here, we’ll take it at your pace.

As well as dental sedation, we can take a natural, holistic approach to treatment of dental anxiety and can refer you for Amatsu therapy.

This is a physical therapy that helps balance the body and brings your body’s healing system into play to overcome physical responses to fear.

Talk to our Fusion Dentistry team about this when you come for your initial visit.
